Old Veseyan Golf Society 2018 – Joining and how it all works

I’ve enjoyed my 30 years plus as a member of the OVGS enormously, it’s a fantastic Society that caters for all types of golfer. As an Old Veseyan it’s simple to join and then it’s up to you when you play…………….how does it work?

The OVGS playing season runs from April to September, a typical year would be made up of nine events, generally involving three matches against Old Sil’s, Old Ed’s and Moor Hall B. We also have half a dozen or so of our own long established competitions, one of which is a Seniors competition at Whittington Heath GC for the over 55’s. Throughout the season we play mostly at Moor Hall but also at Blackwell and Brocton.

At the moment we have in excess of 100 members and the current annual membership fee is only £15. To join, just pay your £15 directly into our bank account and let myself and our secretary David Williscroft know, we can then send you a form to fill in to complete your registration, that’s it then, you’re a member.

At the start of the season David sends a note out to all members notifying them of the various dates of the matches and competitions, this is so people can get the dates in their diaries and give an indication as to what dates they may be available for. About three weeks prior to a competition David sends a note to us all to see who’s available and you can confirm accordingly up until a week or so before……………….there’s no pressure to play and you play as and when it suits you.

After all the competitions and matches there’s a sit down meal for which pretty much everyone stays on for, however you can opt out of this if for some reason you can’t stay. It really is a user friendly society. For each event costs vary but I think we would all say that we get excellent value for money.

As you’d expect the Society is made up of a wide range of members, regarding both age and background. Whilst the golf courses, competitions and food are all reasons enough to enjoy your involvement in the Society, the biggest pull for me has always been the people and conversation, sometimes thought provoking but more often just simply humorous or daft!

I know that there are a lot of contemporaries of mine who play golf and aren’t members and no doubt this will apply for everyone…………….it would be great to see some long lost old faces in 2018, and it would also be great to see some new young blood join. Spread the word and encourage others to join with you, the more the merrier. It’s a privilege to be part of this Society, so I’d urge anyone considering joining to give it a go, we’d love to see you in 2018.
